Karen Armstrong has written on a vast array of topics, including spirituality and religion, history, science, and health and fitness. She often writes about her personal experiences in her books and the goal of her work is to encourage readers to rediscover their own spirituality. Karen Armstrong's first book was published in 1993, when she was in her early forties. This book was called A History of God: The 4000-Year Quest for a Universal Spirituality. This book received the Grand Prize for General Non-Fiction from the French Academies in 1996. Armstrong was born in 1939 and graduated from Oxford in 1957 with a degree in Classical Civilization. She went on to study theology at King's College London where she was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1972. In 1995, she left the priesthood and became a lay scholar of religion at the University of Oxford. Karen Armstrong's second book was published in 2002 when she was sixty years old. It was called The Case for God: What Religious People Believe and Why It Matters. This book won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Philosophy & Religion in 2003.
